I discovered this huge tree, clinging to an eroded cliff of dirt in Prospect Park, NY. Never had I seen something so determined to survive. It was literally hanging on for dear life, and it’s extensive twisted roots were testimony to its endurance and struggle.. As I worked, the tree became its own world, complete with the curvature of the horizon, the neutral sky, and its trunk of heavy bark – from which the roots emanate, like a sublime fan, clutching the earth. The original is oil on canvas.
