Another favorite subject that I love to carve is a bird. “Inclined to Stay” is a stylized bird carved from Italian Carrara marble, and set on a base of Belgian Black limestone. As the bird sits on an incline, hence the title. Each different kind of marble that I carve has its own character; Carrara marble is very finely grained. Because of that characteristic, it is able to “contain” sharp edges that are not possible in some other marbles. When well sanded, it almost has the feel of velvet.
One of the many things I love about stone-carving, is feeling the stone constantly with my hands. That makes me feel connected to the earth in some inexplicable way.
