Hilda was an elder in the town of Perico, Matanzas province, cuba. She encouraged our artist’s research project linking Cuba and Ghana as a result of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Sue Matthews is a painter living in Oakland, California. She holds a BFA from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MFA from San Francisco State University. Her artistic work has focused on Afro-Cuban folklore since 1995, when she began an intensive study of music, dance, and percussion in Cuba.

Recently she has been part of a collaborative artistic team called Secrets Under the Skin, which investigates the cultural links between Cuba and the Volta Region of Ghana/Togo, resulting from the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Secrets Under the Skin premiered in Havana, Cuba in 2012 and has since exhibited in Alaska, San Francisco, Cape Coast and Accra, Ghana and in the Dak’Art Biennale in Dakar, Senegal. She teaches Drawing and Painting at College of San Mateo.
