Oil Painting
by Kathryn Arnold

Oil on canvas
66″H, 66″W

This work is inspired by Japanese death poetry as it examines transience. The field-like contemplative quality and fluctuations between tenacious physical marks and subtle spaces integrates poetic language and random visual interpretations. It is from my series titled The Impact of Language, an inquiry into language.

An NEA Regional Fellowship recipient, Kathryn Arnold completed her MFA with Honors at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. William Burroughs resided in Lawrence the last section of his life and Alan Ginsberg was a frequent visitor, and a bit of the beat poets and writers influence is seen in her work. Her work contains two intertwining veins. One is filled with large, colorful oils on canvas. The other vein includes drawings that are black and white mixed media works on paper. Both display the density and layered mark-making that points to artistic process and content

“My paintings feature coincidental, accidental and unexpected connections. Combining unrelated aspects lead to surprising analogies. By experimenting with aleatoric processes, I create intense personal moments by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer into fields of color and marks.”
