The Road to Ceboruco

$900

Fiber Wall Art
by Karen Schuman

Quilted batik, Embroidery, Acrylic Paint
36″H, 48″W, 1″D

This piece depicts a journey with Toltec teacher Allan Hardman, my husband Kevin, and me, traveling through Mexico to find the path to the top of the sacred volcano, Ceboruco, in quest of fulfillment and enlightenment.    We never did make it. We drove around the volcano without ever finding the path to the top.  What we found was this magnificent landscape.  It made the day’s journey worthwhile in the most magical way….when we released our expectations of how things should be, and found ourselves right where we needed to be.  Quilted into this piece is the Enneagram, a geometrical pattern that represents nine different patterns of personalities, making this piece, for me, a portal to gaze into and find myself there again

“Wisdom is offered to me through shamanic training and world traveling is my inspiration. Making art pieces on concepts such as ‘forgiveness’ or ‘balance’ is my study of relationships with life.

As I work my pieces, I can meditate on the aspects of the concept and work these perceptions into the construction for an evolving understanding of the original concept. I work with many materials; from hand-dyeing fabrics to painting, sewing, beading, collage.

As I cultivate a piece, concepts develop further into the abstract, to ultimately create a story that is personal to me, but still open to free interpretation.”
