I discovered this twisted manzanita in Arrowhead, CA. I was drawn to the maroon bark and green foliage, with its juxtaposition of smoothness and texture. As I painted, the interlocking form and space continued to inspire me, with its shapes of light and dark; solidity and air… The manzanita seemed a perfect calligraphy of nature, and I felt, by painting it, I was able to decipher its meaning. The original is oil on canvas.
Rebecca Gabriel holds an MFA degree from the University of Massachusetts.
