How Can Things Be Unpredictable

Mixed Media Painting
by Kathryn Arnold

Mixed media on paper
48″H, 52″W

This work is from a new series of large-scale drawings created with a variety of materials on Arches archival paper. Within the process of making, I use elements of chance and an integration of forms and marks begins to appear. This brought up the titles question while I worked, how can things be unpredictable? as marks and energies begin to coalesce. This inquiry is one of the driving forces behind my work.

An NEA Regional Fellowship recipient, Kathryn Arnold completed her MFA with Honors at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. William Burroughs resided in Lawrence the last section of his life and Alan Ginsberg was a frequent visitor, and a bit of the beat poets and writers influence is seen in her work. Her work contains two intertwining veins. One is filled with large, colorful oils on canvas. The other vein includes drawings that are black and white mixed media works on paper. Both display the density and layered mark-making that points to artistic process and content

“My paintings feature coincidental, accidental and unexpected connections. Combining unrelated aspects lead to surprising analogies. By experimenting with aleatoric processes, I create intense personal moments by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer into fields of color and marks.”
